Boone 9-26-84, Clinton Brown, 3-27-85, Joe Dillard 9-24-86 and Sister Veronica Thomas 9-24-86 (the first woman licensed by Mt. Gilead). Brothers: George Gill, Jr. and Steven Hicks 7-16-89, Jeffrey Knight 1-31-90; Bro. Jonathan Spells, Sister Paulette Swann and Bro. Leroy Briggs were licensed 6-19-91, William Dixon 7-15-92, James Pierce, Murrell Crittenden, and Fleetwood Price, III 10-28-92, Milton Stewart 9-20-95, Mary Patterson-Hicks and John Allen 12-10-95.Carolyn Willis. Brother Jeffrey Knight was ordained 3-12-93, Brother George Gill, Jr. was given his ordination certificate 6-23-83, Brother Gregory Reese was licensed to preach 1993, Sister Bernita Townes was licensed to preach 7-27-94, Brother Matthew Pettus, Jr. was given his ordination certificate 12-14-94, Brother Stanford A. Mack was given his ordination certificate 1-22-95, Brother Cleveland Brown was ordained in 1996. Bro. Caryle Church , Jr. received his ordination certificate 6-15-96. Brother David Hutcherson, Brother Samuel Bennett, Sister Vernice Bradley and Sister Patricia Newman received their license to preach 10-23-96, Brothers Leroy Briggs and Calvin Brown were ordained 1-23-97. Sisters Robie Matthews, Sonja Nash, Phyllis Brown and Brother Anthony Joyner were licensed to preach on 9-1-97. In October 98, our first woman, Rev. Veronica Thomas, was ordained by Mt. Gilead along with Rev. Alvin Boone. On December 31, 1998 at the New Years Eve Services, Sisters Trenda Cotton-Shipp, Linda Moore, Grace Venable, Brothers Wiley Farr and Emmanuel Swindell were licensed. Rev. Emmanuel Swindell was also ordained.

The following members received their license to preach under the leadership of Dr. Shelton Murphy : Sister Brenda Moore, 10-14-01, Brother Chris Love, 10-14-01, Sister Alice Montgomery, 11-11-01, Sister Doris Dobison, 7-10-02, Sister Adelaide Gilmore-Williams 04, Bro. Robert Jones 1-24-07, Sister Susan Creer, 4-09-08, Min Deshawn Means 10-04-2008. Ministers joining the Ministerial staff after joining Mt. Gilead were: Rev. Janice Spellman – 2002, Min. Levi Chapman – 2002, Rev. Debra Haggins 3-5-03, and Min. Winston Simmons, 8-17-03. Min. Shawn Singleton joined our ministerial team in 2004.

Deacons:

Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church was founded in the home of the late Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Jones. The first Official Chairman of the Deacons was the late Louis Whitfield, elected in 1894. On December 8, 1917, Alexander L. Hudgins was elected to the board of Deacons. In 1922 he became chairman of the deacon board. The Communion Sacrament which consisted of homemade bread and wine was made in his home. Succeeding Chairmen were, Emanuel Goodman in 1936, Ernest Edler in 1951, William Ambrose in 1972, Troy Warren in 1973, Clarence Anderson in 1975 & 1995, Raymond Norman in 1993 and Winfred Thomas in 1998–2002, Willie L. Brown 2003-2006, Gregory Ash 2006-2008 . Our present Chairman is Willie L. Brown.

Through the years members of the Deacon Fellowship have been busy doing God's work. For example, Deacon Jasper Brown became the Church Treasurer December 14, 1951 and was elected Assistant Chairman of the Deacons December 17, 1975. Succeeding Deacon Brown as Church Treasurer was Deacon Otha Henderson. He also served faithfully until December 1985. In December 1985, Deacon Troy Warren was elected the Sunday School Superintendent, and Deacon Fred Alston, Assistant Superintendent, he served until 1990. Deacon Fred Alston was elected Assistant Chairman of Deacon Board in 1998.

Deacon Raymond H. Norman was elected Chairman of the Trustees February 12, 1951 and became advisor to the Young Voices December 14, 1969. In 1989 Deacon Norman was elected Chairman of the Budget Committee and Financial Secretary. In 1993 Deacon Raymond Norman was elected Chairman of the Deacon Board.

Deacon H. N. Wiggins was elected Chairman of the Auditing Committee January 13, 1961, Assistant Chairman of the Deacons in 1973, and on January 4, 1976 he organized the Men's Sunday School class where he served until he was called to the Ministry in 1983. In 1985 Deacon Edward Jefferson organized the Ministry of Christmas Baskets giving and continues today along with Deacons Ernest House and Reginald Spratley.

Deacon Willie Brown was appointed the Youth Revival Coordinator and served in that capacity for several years. Deacon Willie Brown was the Chairman when we hosted the First Virginia Baptist State Convention. He was also very active in our youth program. He was elected Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee in December 1989. In 1990, he organized the New Membership Committee. In 1993 Deacon Brown was elected Assistant Chairman of the Deacon Board.

Deacon E. Edgar Watson was appointed Parliamentarian during the Church Business Session and Chairman of the Audit Committee in 1985. He also served as Benevolent Treasurer and as Sunday School Teacher, Deacon Watson organized the Student Recognition and Honors Program in 1986, of which he was coordinator as well as the co-coordinator of the Antoinette F. Hillian Tutorial Program. He served in these capacities until his death in 1993. Deacon Thomas Gray was appointed Assistant Benevolent Treasurer in August 1992 to Deacon Watson when he was unable to serve as Treasurer and assumed the duties of Treasurer after Deacon Watson's death in 1993 until 2003.

Deacon Winfred Thomas was divinely inspired to organize a Men Fellowship named, “Agape Sharers” in 1996. He was elected the “Father of the Year” in 1995. He was Co-Founder of the “Growing in Faith” Bible Study in 1989. Deacon Thomas also co-counsels couples on making continuous investment in their spiritual marriage. In 1999 under the admonishment and encouragement of Pastor Dean, Deacon Thomas led the Deacons in taking prayer service to a higher level through ten minutes of teaching during prayer service.

Deacons ordained or added to the Board in 1977 were Willie Brown, Raymond Norman, Joseph Price and E. Edgar Watson. Thomas Gray was in 1981. In 1984, Herbert Price, Ervin Jordan and James Howell. In 1989, Isaac Willis, James Watford, and Thomas Wadley were added. In 1991, Jessie Coley, Lindley Foreman, Nebraska Williams, Cleveland Brown, Gregory Reese, and Winfred Thomas were added to the Deacon Board. In 1994 Vernon Jackson & Joe Jones, Sr. In 1996 Edward Jefferson. In 1997 Ernest Shields and Robert Newman. Deacons ordained on June 30, 2002 were Gregory Ash, Leon Barnes, Vincent Bowen, Samuel Boykins, Robert Bridges, David Evans, Ernest House, Wendell Johnson and Reginald Spratley.

October 17, 2002 the following Deacons became Deacon Emeritus: Lindley Foreman, Thomas Wadley, Joseph Price, James Hines, Clarence Anderson, Ervin Jordan and Fred Alston. Floyd Sweatt was recommended by the church to become a Deacon-Elect on October 16, 2003, completed his six month training in April 2004, and voted in as a Deacon in the same month. Harvey Barrett, Floyd Peterson, James K. Phillips, and Sheldon Smith were voted on by the church to become Candidates for Deacons-Elect in January 22, 2004, and installed as Deacons at the 11 AM service on January 23, 2005. January 29, 2009, Reginald Spratley, Edward Jefferson, Vernon Jackson and Raymond Norman, became Deacon Emeritus. New Deacons in training as of April 16, 2009 are Rudy Walker, Jeffrey Moore, Kelvin McGhee, Lionel Baker, Corey Peters and Dennis McCray.

Junior Deacons:

The Junior Deacons Ministry is inactive. However, the first Official Chairperson of the Junior Deacon Ministry was Bro. Tony Diggs. The Junior Deacon Ministry consist of the following brethren: Bro. Daniel Brickhouse, Bro. Sidney Carroll, Bro. Ezell David, Bro. Brian Doctor, Bro. Brehon Evans, Bro. Dallas Gerald, Bro. Rodger Jordan, Bro. Michael S. Morris, Bro. Brian Otey, and Bro. Joshual Tyus.
